About
Ryan Bates is a Boston-based scenic designer and inveterate dabbler in costumes, props, and construction. A native of Danvers, Massachusetts and a resident of Quincy, Ryan is committed to creating spaces and experiences in which storytelling can foster compassion and spark discussion about the infinite needs, desires, and dreams that fuel the workings of our city. He thrives on working with his collaborators to mine the dramatic potential of each unique venue, be it a proscenium theatre, a small black box, a park, a church hall, a back alley, or a ball pit (still waiting for the opportunity to come along for this one).
Ryan holds an MFA in Scenic Design from Boston University, where he was the recipient of the 2015 Douglas W. Schmidt award for Excellence in Scenic Design, and a BA in Theatre and History of Art and Architecture from Middlebury College.
